Collection Sample - HIV/AIDS Posters, Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies
World AIDS Day 2006 Video

Figures just released by UNAIDS and WHO estimate a world-wide population of people living with AIDS as 39.5 million, 24.7 million of whom live in Africa south of the Sahara.

The poster collection of the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, Northwestern University, documents the efforts of African governments and private organizations to promote public awareness regarding HIV & AIDS. This three-minute video shows a small sample of posters drawn from the collection.

The Herskovits Library has a long-standing commitment to collecting posters because of the important role posters play in many aspects of public communication and because of their wide use throughout the continent.

In the near future, about 200 such posters will be added to the Herskovits Library poster website.

This video was created by John Kannenberg, Library Assistant, in the Herskovits Library. The poster digitization project is the result of the efforts of many Northwestern University Library staff in a number of departments - Catalog, Digital Library Systems Development, Digital Media Services, Preservation and the Herskovits Library as well as staff in Academic Technologies, a department of Northwestern University Information Technology.
