Model and actress Daphne Maxwell graduated from WCAS in 1970. In 1967 she became Northwestern's first African American Homecoming Queen, an event which attracted national attention. The following May, she joined other black students at NU in taking over an administration building to bring attention to the issues they faced. The takeover resulted in agreements giving African American students a greater voice in campus matters. Reid went on to a modeling career, and later became an actress, appearing in such television series as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She married actor Tim Reid. Together they own New Millennium Studios in Petersburg, Virginia. She returned to Northwestern most recently to participate in a Center for African American History forum commemorating the 40th anniversary of the events of May, 1968.
