Pugg's Graces
Title Pugg's Graces
Artist Pau lSandby
Date 1753-1754
Medium Engraving
Location The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections, Northwestern University

Hogarth is depicted here in front of his easel, with the lower body of a pug dog. Before him, a large amateur points to three distinctly un-graceful 'graces.' Elements from the Analysis are strewn in the foreground, including a corset, a pair of candlesticks and a boot. Their irregular numbers refer to the numbering Hogarth used in his illustrations to the Analysis, which appears under his paw. Hogarth's plagiarism is suggested by the inclusion of Lomazzo's text in his pocket.
