Throughout his artistic career, Hogarth was committed to the advancement of a distinctly British art. Even as early as 1744/1745, his Battle of the Pictures imagines a struggle between non-British mythological and religious paintings and his own images.
Here, Britannia waters the three growing trunks of British painting, architecture and sculpture with water spouting from the mouth of the British lion, embedded in a monument to King George III.
