The Topography of Decay

The Four Times of Day Plate I, Morning
Title The Four Times of Day Plate I, Morning
Artist William Hogarth
Date 1738
Medium Etching and Engraving
Location The Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth University

Hogarth's Times of Day series satirizes such allegorical paintings of Time by replacing mythical figures with real Londoners crowded tightly into the city's public spaces. These four views of London show the moral ambiguity and self-absorption of urban characters. The prim churchgoer in Morning is foiled by drunken lovers in the popular Covent Garden Market.
