Idle's pose of terror is a reference to Hogarth's 1745 monumental portrait David Garrick in the Role of Richard III . Both works draw upon Le Brun's Conférence de Monsieur Le Brun sur l'expression générale et particulière (1698), which gives descriptions of such similar facial expressions and hand gestures as "Astonishment with Fright" and "Horror."
