Plate XII
Industry and Idleness,<BR>Plate XII
Title Industry and Idleness
Plate XII, The Industrious 'Prentice Lord Mayor of London
Artist William Hogarth
Date 1747 (reprinted 1822)
Medium Etching and Engraving from Drawings
Location The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections, Northwestern University

As Lord Mayor of London, Goodchild rides lifelessly through the bustling streets of London in his gilded carriage. His facial expression evinces no sign of joy or emotion, and as with his depiction in
Plate VIII, his character plays a tiny role in the life of the print. Compare the impassive faces of the Prince of Wales and his entourage at the top left corner of the print to the passionate, excited, sometimes suffering, sometimes joyful faces of the mob.
