The Invasion Plate I France
Title The Invasion
Plate I France
Artist William Hogarth
Date 1756 (reprinted 1822)
Medium Etching
Location The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections, Northwestern University

In 1756 the Seven Years' War began. England and Prussia fought against Catholic France and Austria. Moreover, France and England were at war over colonial possessions in America (The French and Indian War). With the two prints of The Invasion, Hogarth refuted the fear of a French invasion of England. An entirely unprepared French army is accompanied by a ridiculous monk, testing his ax beside the tools of torture he will use to coerce the British people into Catholicism.
