Filing the edges
Step 1 Plate Preparation: filing the edges

In order to avoid unintended marks in the print, the plate must be as smooth as possible before the etching and engraving processes begin. Burrs are removed from the edges of the plate with a scraper. The rough edges are then beveled with a file, as shown. Finally, the edges are burnished with oil, making them smooth and unable to hold ink.
