An aged and bare-breasted, pregnant woman vends a vaguely autobiographical ballad, 'The Ladies Fall,' to the tune of her crying child. The beautiful singing milkmaid, like the central drummer of Southwark Fair, performs her trade with dignity in spite of the plebeian clamor around her. Both professional women utter sweet songs of their labor while a perturbed violinist peers down from the window in disgust.
